UM Health-Sparrow Team Helps Deliver Baby Outside Lansing Hospital

LANSING, MI – In an extraordinary display of teamwork and quick thinking, University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Lansing public safety officers and emergency department team members sprang into action early Monday morning to help a woman in labor in front of the hospital.

34-year-old Meghan Clark of East Lansing was unable to make it inside the hospital in time and delivered her baby, Ruby James, just before 4 a.m. in the hospital’s valet drive.

Officers Ashbaugh, Wright, Griffin, and Dible rushed to assist, ensuring both the newborn and her mother were safe. Meghan’s husband, Jacob, wrapped the two in a blanket until emergency department team members arrived and transported them inside for further care.

Baby Ruby was born weighing 8 pounds and 6 ounces and was 20 inches long. Both she and her mother are doing well, and the family expressed their gratitude to the UM Health-Sparrow team for their swift and compassionate care.

“This heartwarming incident highlights the dedication and readiness of UM Health-Sparrow officers and emergency department team members to support their community in critical moments,” said Jerry Dumond, director of public safety and chief of police authority and K-9, University of Michigan Health-Sparrow.
