ST. JOHNS, Mich. – University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Clinton is excited for the community to use its new advanced digital PET/CT scanner, which allows for earlier disease detection, finding the precise location of any issues and determining the cancer’s stage, while allowing patients to receive advanced care close to home.

The new PET/CT scanner significantly expands diagnostic imaging capabilities for the St. Johns community and surrounding areas.

“Our mission is to ensure our communities have access to the highest quality health care, and that includes the most advanced diagnostic tools available,” said Linda Reetz, Regional Market President for U-M Health and who oversees Community Hospitals.

The scanner represents a major leap forward in imaging technology. While a traditional CT scan provides detailed images of the structural anatomy of organs, a PET scan reveals how cells behave on a metabolic level. By combining these two methods, the system provides a more comprehensive picture of a patient’s health. The advanced digital detector technology offers high-resolution images that help doctors evaluate the effectiveness of treatments and can reduce the need for invasive biopsies or exploratory surgeries.

“The addition of this advanced PET/CT technology is a gamechanger for our patients and our team,” said Kevin Hansen, Director of Operations at UM Health-Sparrow Carson and UM Health-Sparrow Clinton.

The new scanner joins an extensive range of services already available at UM Health-Sparrow Community Hospitals. All UM Health-Sparrow locations offer advanced imaging, including MRI, ultrasound, mammography and bone density testing, along with general X-ray, fluoroscopy and select invasive radiology procedures. Patients also have access to cardiology services such as echocardiology and walk-in EKG, as well as pulmonary function testing and home sleep studies.

The campuses provide oncology and infusion therapy, orthopedics, general surgery, urology and wound clinic services, backed by physical therapy, occupational therapy and endoscopy. Emergency services are staffed by board-certified providers, with primary care, a walk-in clinic and durable medical supplies and a retail pharmacy rounding out a full spectrum of care designed to keep patients close to home.

The new PET/CT scanner is now operational and available for patients at UM Health-Sparrow Clinton. For more information, visit UofMHealthSparrow.org/our-hospitals-services/um-health-sparrow-hospitals/Clinton.
