Taylor Kelsaw and co-host, Michael McCallum talk with Milton L. Scales, Trustee of Meridian Township. They talk about an upcoming event, The Legacy of Emmett Till: Understanding History from Four Perspectives. Till, was a 14-year-old Chicago native, who while visiting relatives in Mississippi, was accused of whistling at a white woman. He was captured, beaten and thrown into the river.
The Okemos Education Foundation proudly presents a “free” panel discussion highlighting the unique viewpoints of Wheeler Parker, Emmett Till’s cousin, who was present during the incident. Bringing history to life, Wheeler Parker shares his first-hand account of the “whistling” encounter and Emmett’s kidnapping.
Dr. Tamara Butler, Michigan State University Assistant Professor of English, African American and African Studies Program, offers insight into why this event is relevant today, by exploring parallel cases in the news. This event will be moderated by Kristina Marshall, JD, Professor of Social Sciences at Baker College of Owosso.
