NLEA Co-Hosts Regional Business Outlook to Explore Economic Trends and Industry Insights

The NLEA and the Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce recently hosted the Regional Business Outlook event, bringing together community and business leaders from across northern Michigan to explore key economic trends shaping the region.

The program featured a panel of industry experts representing manufacturing, construction, finance, landscaping, and agriculture, who shared insights on growth challenges such as workforce housing shortages and state policy impacts. Panelists also discussed strategies to foster sustainable business development in the coming year. Speakers included Scott Philp (Landscape Logic), Juliette King-McAvoy (King Orchards), Jake Manthei (Aster Brands), Bill Marshall (Huntington Bank), and Serenity Dankert (Ironwood Construction Company), with moderation by Sam Bailey of the NLEA.

“It was meaningful to have business leaders sharing ideas and information that can help to build better organizations that are the backbone of our community,” said Bill Marshall.

NLEA Releases Economic Pulse Report Showcasing Regional Economic Trends

The NLEA recently released its latest Economic Pulse Report, offering valuable insights into regional economic trends, development projects, and business confidence across northern Michigan. The bi-annual survey captured input from organizations representing over 3,450 employees and local governments in Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, and Emmet counties.

Findings revealed that 81% of business leaders and 56% of government officials identified the lack of attainable housing as a major growth barrier, while 63% of business leaders cited ongoing staffing shortages. Respondents estimated they could collectively hire 330 additional workers and generate $185 million in new revenue within two years if workforce challenges were resolved.

“The Economic Pulse Report provides a critical, up-to-date snapshot of the regional economy. The NLEA generates this insightful data to inform business and community leaders and better equip the NLEA and our partners to deliver effective strategies and solutions,” said Sam Bailey.
