(Detroit) – The Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union today announced that their 8,000-person strong organization made up of 150 locals covering 170 communities has endorsed Independent Mike Duggan for Governor.
To the MPFFU, performance matters much more than party.
“Our union doesn’t endorse based on what candidates say. We endorse based on what they do. Mike Duggan has strongly supported firefighters and all first responders as Mayor of Detroit and throughout his career. Michigan is ready for the type of leader Mike is: serious, productive and trustworthy,” said Matt Sahr, president of the Michigan Professional Firefighters Union (MPFFU).
MPFFU membership is made up of more than 8,000 active and retired firefighters and emergency medical workers from 150 locals, representing 170 communities. They were founded in 1947 as a subordinate union of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) and play a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of firefighters and the communities they serve. They are the state’s largest career fire fighter organization, protecting more than 5 million Michiganders.
“Without someone who’s seriously dedicated to putting Michigan on the right path, Michigan will continue to slip in the rankings for reading, economic competitiveness and population growth,” Duggan said. “I got into this race not as a Republican or a Democrat because the way forward will be paved by someone who takes the time to listen and prove themselves. I’m so grateful to the Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union for endorsing me as the candidate they see fulfilling that vision.”
The MPFFU represents about 5,000 active and 3,000 retired members. The union aims to protect firefighters so they can provide life saving services to residents and visitors of Michigan.
MPFFU has a history of endorsing candidates that support fire fighter issues, regardless of party affiliation, and advocates for the passing of legislation that would protect firefighters or create a more fair working environment, like safe staffing levels, collective bargaining rights, adequately funding fire departments, and more.
