LANSING – The Michigan House Labor Committee passed a series of legislation today that would ensure thousands of public employees have access to a more secure retirement. The multiple legislative packages include:
-
House Bill 4665-67 – provides corrections officers and other certain law enforcement officials access to similar benefits currently provided to the Michigan State Police.
-
House Bill 6060-61 – provides an option for a defined benefit plan for new hires and an election option for current public school employees
-
Senate Bills 165-167 – provides corrections officers and other certain law enforcement officials access to similar benefits currently provided to the Michigan State Police.
In response to the move today, Coalition for Secure Retirement Chairperson Nick Ciaramitaro issued the following statement:
“Michigan’s shortage of teachers, public safety officers and other vital public employees threatens to harm the quality of life in communities across the state. These bills will help retain and recruit quality talent into public service by ensuring they have the opportunity for a quality retirement that otherwise would not have been available,” said Ciaramitaro.
The State of Michigan currently has more than 500 positions open right now, with shortages at the Department of Corrections well-publicized. Coalition for Secure Retirement members will be actively engaged in the final days of the legislative session to ensure that quality retirement benefits are included as a solution for addressing Michigan’s employment needs.
