ST. JOHNS, Mich. — September 30, 2026 — Clinton County has been recognized as one of Michigan’s 2026 Best Managed Counties by Business View, earning the publication’s distinguished Best Managed Counties designation for its thoughtful approach to growth, economic development, workforce preparation, infrastructure, recreation, and preservation of community character.

Business View highlighted Clinton County’s ability to accommodate steady population growth while protecting the agricultural heritage, small-town character, and quality of life valued by residents.

“Clinton County stands out as one of Michigan’s Best Managed Counties for its thoughtful approach to growth—strengthening its economy and workforce while preserving the agricultural heritage, small-town character, and quality of life that residents value,” Business View stated.

The recognition follows Business View’s feature, “Growing Without Losing Its Soul,” which examines how Clinton County is balancing growth and innovation with its longstanding agricultural and community identity.

The feature highlighted the county’s commitment to thoughtful, compatible growth, with County Administrator/Controller John F. Fuentes emphasizing the importance of ensuring new opportunities are compatible with the character of Clinton County’s communities and contribute to a high quality of life for residents.

The feature also highlighted the county’s efforts to address infrastructure needs that can support future development. “We’ve been supportive in trying to be involved to work through this so we can get a cooperative agreement and authority,” said Bruce DeLong, Chairperson of the Clinton County Board of Commissioners. “It will definitely expand the area in and around St. Johns for future development.”

Business View pointed to several examples of this approach, including the county’s agricultural economy and the $555 million Glanbia-led dairy processing facility in St. Johns, which represents a major investment connected to the region’s dairy industry.

The publication also highlighted Clinton County’s workforce-development efforts through its Regional Education Service Agency, local schools, employers, and 4-H programs. These initiatives help connect students with agricultural, skilled-trade, and other career opportunities available within the region.

At the same time, county leaders are addressing infrastructure and housing needs created by continued population growth. Partnerships involving local municipalities are exploring expanded water and sewer infrastructure, while the county continues to invest in parks and recreation, including Clinton Trails County Park, acquired in late 2023.

Business View noted that these efforts reflect a broader philosophy of intentional, compatible growth.

Business View launched its Best in Business Awards series in 2024. According to the publication, recipients are selected by its research team, senior producers, executives, and editor based on its analysis of factors including growth, data, values, culture, resilience, ingenuity, and sustainable results.
