LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Virtual has officially named Katrina Schneider, a biology instructor from Stevensville, its 2026 Teacher of the Year and Angela Mackenzie from Pinckney Community Schools its Mentor of the Year. Michigan Virtual recognizes instructors who demonstrate exceptional leadership and teaching skills, as well as commitment to student development both inside the classroom and in their future careers. Both Katrina and Angela were granted these honors after being nominated by fellow educators who underscored how critical they are as leaders for student success.

Michigan Virtual is part of a diverse community of educators who strive to provide students with ample opportunities for success,” said Jamey Fitzpatrick, president and CEO of Michigan Virtual. “Our team is fortunate to work alongside and partner with educators from different school districts across the state. Both Katrina and Angela go above and beyond and have made a great impact on the lives of many students, demonstrating exemplary leadership among their peers.”

Schneider has 16 years of teaching experience and has been working at Michigan Virtual since 2020, where she currently teaches high school biology, bioethics, chemistry, and other science courses online. Her love for science and teaching developed early on in her career, when she received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Western Michigan University. Driven by a love of helping others learn and grow, Schneider is known for her uplifting attitude and for building meaningful connections with her students.

“My goal as an educator is to create supportive, student-centered learning environments where students not only deepen their understanding of science, but become lifelong learners,” said Schneider. “Even as an experienced professional, I continuously seek opportunities for growth and ways to expand my skillset. Once students leave my classroom, whether they go off to college or an alternative career path, I hope they are driven by curiosity and do not hinder themselves by conforming to society’s definition of career success. Success looks different for everyone, and I encourage my students to be multifaceted and advocate for themselves in professional and personal settings.”

MacKenzie has over 20 years of experience in education and has served as an Alternative Education Program Teacher and Mentor at Pinckney Community Schools for six years. Her role entails guiding diverse learners across traditional and virtual academic landscapes, providing academic instruction based on personal skill level and learning style. She is dedicated to cultivating an inclusive learning environment and preparing students for their future careers.

“Throughout my career in education, I was always drawn toward supporting students beyond academics; helping them navigate challenges, build confidence, and connect school to their future goals,” said MacKenzie. “I want students to understand that challenges do not define them and that success is possible even if their path looks different from others. Some of the most rewarding moments happen when a student who once doubted themselves begins to feel confident, engaged, and hopeful about their future. Being able to play a small role in that transformation is what motivates me every day.”

Since 2015, there have been a total of 24 mentors and teachers to receive the honor of Michigan Virtual Online Mentor of the Year or Teacher of the Year. Individuals are nominated by Michigan Virtual instructors who have ongoing communication with both students and educators and can see student progress and academic achievements firsthand.

To become a recipient, the instructor must be committed to supporting student potential and advancing student success beyond the classroom. They must prioritize consistent communication between students, parents, and other Michigan Virtual instructors, building rapport and trust within their community. Those selected set the bar for excellence among all leaders in the digital learning space.
