Village of Vicksburg – Village’s 176-building historic district receives National Register of Historic Places designation
As the Village of Vicksburg celebrates its 150th anniversary, the 3,500-person village in southwest Kalamazoo County has another reason to celebrate as it was recently informed that its entire historic district was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Whereas most distinctions go to individual properties, Vicksburg’s designation is for the entire downtown and surrounding areas – 176 properties in total. Housing Yes Charlevoix – Charlevoix Public Schools feeling housing pinch during staffing recruitment
A school system superintendent in the northern Michigan vacation town of Charlevoix says lack of year-round housing is making it difficult to recruit staff. He reports that some teachers and administrators have turned down offers due to lack of housing stock. A housing advocacy group, Housing Yes Charlevoix, is working to support better housing solutions for year-round residents in Charlevoix. Wedgwood Christian Services – Federal health panel calls for anxiety screenings for all adults
In late September, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommended for the first time that physicians screen adults for anxiety. The panel, assembled through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, was based on reports of increased stress levels among adults 65 and younger since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Wedgwood’s outpatient counseling services offer screenings for adults and children. Clinical psychiatrists can be available for interviews on the topic.
Cruise the Great Lakes – Detroit port celebrates record-breaking cruise ship season
Detroit Port Authority and Cruise the Great Lakes leaders shared last week the record-breaking statistics from the 2022 cruise ship season in Detroit and provided a forecast for what 2023 will bring. A news release is available and officials are available for comment on the season.
Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Governor’s & Premiers Conference – Campaign aims to demonstrate how Great Lakes whitefish can be more fully used
The Conference of Great Lakes St. Lawrence Governors & Premiers, a Chicago-based organization representing the Governors of the Great Lakes States and the Canadian Premiers of Ontario and Québec launched its “100% Whitefish” initiative with a demonstration of how 100% of a whitefish can be used for different purposes and beyond just food. The effort builds on success with the cod in Iceland and with other species elsewhere globally. Organizers believe that a 100% fish strategy holds tremendous promise for the Great Lakes St. Lawrence region to more completely utilize caught fish, drive greater economic returns, create jobs, and help develop rural economies.
