From Boomers to Zoomers: The Generational Impact on the Workforce

A Future of Work Town Hall

One Detroit explores each of the last four generations’ unique perspectives, questions, and aspirations around the future of work

Each generation has its unique perspectives, questions, and aspirations around the future of work and what’s needed to make Michigan the place to live, work, and play. With Michigan’s population on the decline, looking at each generation’s impact on our economy becomes paramount to seeing how we can turn from population loss toward growth.

Today’s workforce is made up of four distinct generations. Baby Boomers are the oldest, born between the years 1946 and 1964 which means they are nearing retirement age. Boomers are followed by Gen X, who were born between 1965 and 1980. Up next is Generation Y (more commonly known as millennials), born between roughly 1981 and 1994, who is then followed by the youngest generation in today’s workforce, Gen Z, born between 1995 and 2009.

Since January 2023, One Detroit has been exploring the impact each generation has had on the state’s workforce, economy, and overall prosperity. We’ve looked at the challenges Baby Boomers face in today’s workforce and the knowledge gaps they may leave behind when they retire, We’ve taken a deep look at Gen X as the next generation of leaders who have taken up the mantle to prepare people for the jobs that don’t exist yet, and as millennials make their way up the work chain, we’ve examined whether the state has the attractions and opportunities to interest this generation to stay here. Lastly, we’ve talked with three members of Gen Z about their futures and what they expect when they enter the workforce after graduation.

Join host Will Glover in a Future of Work town hall that delves into the in-depth conversations we’ve convened about each generation’s impact on Michigan’s workforce and their outlook on Michigan’s future. This broadcast is a montage of the best of prerecorded segments from recent town halls. Watch it here.

This lively conversation exemplifies the unique ways public media can bring people together around important topics and conversations to transform the communities we serve.

This town hall continues One Detroit’s cumulative, ongoing conversation involving the future of work. To learn more, visit here.
