DETROIT, MI – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI), a former Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve and a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today released a video in advance of Memorial Day.

“While the Coronavirus pandemic has upended annual traditions of this solemn holiday, we cannot forget those who died in service for our nation,” said Senator Peters, a former Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve and a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. “That’s why this year it is on us to take the time to not only honor those we lost and their families – but to reflect on those still carrying the invisible wounds of war.”

“This year’s Memorial Day won’t be like past years. Ceremonies remembering the generations of servicemen and women who gave their lives to protect our freedom may be different this year as many Michiganders cannot gather with family and friends.

“While the Coronavirus pandemic has upended annual traditions of this solemn holiday, we cannot forget those who died in service for our nation. That’s why this year it is on us to take the time to not only honor those we lost and their families – but to reflect on those still carrying the invisible wounds of war. Whether that’s finding innovative, online ways to support Gold Star families – or to support wounded veterans – I encourage everyone to take some time to pay tribute to Michigan’s and our nation’s heroes.

“God bless all those who have served, God bless those currently combating this devastating disease and God bless the United States of America.”
