Below is the text as prepared for delivery:

“While many of us will be spending some quality and much-needed time with friends and family this weekend – we must remember to pause and reflect on the significance of this holiday.

“Memorial Day is a solemn time to honor and pay respect to the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. These heroes gave their lives in order to protect our freedoms, our values, and our way of life – and their service is a debt we can never repay.

“Memorial Day is also for the families – the mothers and fathers, wives, husbands, sisters, and brothers – who have lost a loved one in service. To those families that must carry this grief and unimaginable loss, know that we stand with you each and every day.

“So, I urge every Michigander and American on this day to pay tribute to the generations of servicemembers who embody the values that make our nation so strong.

“God bless all those who have served. God bless those currently serving our country around the world. And God bless the United States of America.”
