LANSING, Mich. – In a gesture of gratitude for those who care for the community’s youngest patients, Ronald McDonald House Charities Mid-Michigan and local McDonald’s owner-operators delivered Shamrock Shakes today to the staff at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital at University of Michigan Health-Sparrow today.
The surprise treat was made possible by Jon Campbell, McDonald’s owner/operator in Lansing, who donated the shakes to support the hospital’s compassionate team members.
“It’s a wonderful experience to be able to partner with our local McDonald’s to bring a surprise to the nurses, caregivers and doctors that are here taking care of patients all day long,” said Carolyn Hurst, executive director of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mid-Michigan. “We’re always energized by the ability to make someone’s stay a little bit more positive.”
While the delivery boosted the spirits of health care workers, Hurst noted that the impact of the gesture resonates with families as well. She explained that small comforts can make a significant difference for parents staying at Ronald McDonald House while their child receives treatment.
“When they spend long hours at the bedside helping their child work towards healing and recovering, sometimes little things are just the biggest pick-me-up,” Hurst said. “You can have a Shamrock Shake, and it will just put a smile on somebody’s face as they’re facing some things that they’ve never had to deal with before.”
The hospital visit coincides with the annual Shamrock Shake season, which directly benefits RMHC Mid-Michigan. For every Shamrock Shake and Shamrock Shake McFlurry sold at participating Mid-Michigan McDonald’s locations, the restaurants will donate 25 cents to the local Ronald McDonald House. The funds help provide families with private guest rooms, bathrooms, homemade meals, on-site laundry and other essential services while their children are hospitalized.
