EAST LANSING, Mich.- UM Health-Sparrow is encouraging the community to prioritize breast health during this Breast Cancer Awareness Month by offering educational programs, free screening events and online resources designed to support patients and families throughout their care journey.

To raise awareness about the disease and to encourage prevention and early detection, UM Health-Sparrow Senior Health Series today presented “Breast Health Matters: Prevention, Early Detection, and Healthy Aging” for older adults and to discuss cancer risk factors, the importance of regular screenings, recognizing changes in breast health and lifestyle habits that support overall wellness.

“Breast health is important at every age, and regular screenings and awareness can lead to earlier detection and better outcomes for older adults,” said Brittani Thomas, D.O., Oncologist at UM Health-Sparrow. “We want people to feel empowered to understand their risk factors and take steps that protect their health.”

Throughout the month, UM Health-Sparrow also will be in the community offering free mammogram events through our Mobile Health Clinic. The Mobile Health Clinic is partnering with UM Health-Sparrow Women’s Services and Breast Imaging to offer free women’s health screenings with screening mammography on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at UM Health-Sparrow Ionia, 3565 S. State St., Ionia. Additional free mammogram events will be held Oct. 20, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at UM Health-Sparrow Carson, 406 E. Elm St., Carson City, and Oct. 29, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at UM Health-Sparrow Lansing Health Center, 2909 E. Grand River Ave., Lansing.

“Our Mobile Health Clinic allows us to meet people where they are and remove barriers to care,” said Ashley Grubaugh, Manager at UM Health–Sparrow Mobile Clinic.

UM Health-Sparrow also offers a Breast Health Resource Page with links to clinical as well as local, state, and national support programs and services. The page addresses patient and family needs across three phases of care. Prevention focuses on healthy habits and screening tests to lower risk and find problems early. Treatment includes services for those actively navigating care, such as financial help, fitness activities to promote healing, and support groups. Survivorship provides resources that contribute to long-term health and well-being as patients’ complete treatment.
