UM Health-Sparrow Earns Top National Honors for Stroke, Diabetes Care

LANSING, MI – University of Michigan Health-Sparrow has been nationally recognized as a high performer in four areas, while U-M Health’s Ann Arbor adult hospitals were ranked best in Michigan and in the top 20 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings for 2025-26.

U-M Health is the clinical division of Michigan Medicine, the academic medical center of the University of Michigan.

U.S. News based its rankings on key quality measures, including mortality rates, preventable complications, and nursing care. It also evaluates performance regarding specific procedures and conditions. They honored UM Health-Sparrow as “high performing” in the following:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart arrhythmia
  • Leukemia, lymphoma & myeloma
  • Prostate cancer surgery

UM Health-West, based in the Grand Rapids area, was recognized as high performing for:

  • Hip replacement
  • Knee replacement
  • Prostate cancer surgery
  • Spinal fusion

Out of more than 4,400 hospitals evaluated, U-M Health’s Ann Arbor hospitals earned a spot on the U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll, ranking among the top 20 hospitals nationwide. This distinction reflects U-M Health’s high performance across a wide range of specialties, procedures, and conditions.

The organization had three medical specialties ranked in the nation’s top 10 and three medical specialties ranked in the nation’s top 20.

U-M Health’s Ann Arbor hospitals are ranked No. 8 in the country for ophthalmology; No. 9 for ear, nose & throat; and No. 10 for rheumatology. It also received national rankings in the following specialties: 

  • Cancer (#32)
  • Cardiology, heart and vascular surgery (#21)
  • Diabetes and endocrinology (#25)
  • Gastroenterology and GI surgery (#29)
  • Geriatrics (#20)
  • Neurology and neurosurgery (#29)
  • Pulmonology and lung surgery (#14)
  • Urology (#19)
