UM Health-Sparrow Earns Top National Honors for Stroke, Diabetes Care

MBN: UMH Sparrow USNews

LANSING, MI –University of Michigan Health-Sparrow and our Comprehensive Stroke Center have received the highest level of recognition for stroke care nationally and for treating Type 2 diabetes patients who have had strokes.

For the eighth consecutive year, the Stroke Center earned the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get with the Guidelines®-Stroke GOLD PLUS achievement award and Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus for performance during 2023-24. UM Health-Sparrow’s diabetes program has also been recognized with the AHA/ASA’s Get with the Guidelines® Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll for providing patients who might be at higher risk for complications the most up-to-date, leading edge treatment when hospitalized due to stroke.

Stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times.

As the region’s only comprehensive stroke center, we’re able to provide the highest level of care in Mid-Michigan to save lives and improve our patients’ quality of life.
