Tri-County Launches HousingDrives Project to Improve Housing in Greater Lansing

Tri-Co

HousingDrives to Provide Assessment of Current Housing Market and Strategy for Future Improvement

LANSING, Mich. – The Tri-County Regional Planning Commission (Tri-County) is conducting a comprehensive housing assessment of Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham counties called HousingDrives to better understand and address the existing trends and barriers of the housing market in Greater Lansing.

HousingDrives will use qualitative and quantitative information to provide a holistic conversation on how housing impacts every aspect of the economy. This will include a data-driven assessment at the neighborhood, city, and regional scale and a strategy with specific policies addressing the region’s housing needs.

The results of this work will help to identify critical gaps in local, regional, and statewide housing networks, and establish areas of opportunity for targeted investment strategies and strategic planning processes.

“Housing drives so many aspects of our daily lives in tri-county region – from our financial health and economy to our quality of life and the well-being of our families and neighbors,”  said Tri-County Executive Director Jim Snell. “We’ve heard from our community – neighbors, entrepreneurs, institutions, and businesses – that our region does not have enough attainable housing for current and future residents. But, we don’t know what specific needs are.”

Once the study is complete, the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission and its partners will use it to make informed decisions about investing in attainable housing for all residents.

The steering committee for HousingDrives will oversee the effort. Members of the steering committee have a broad range of perspectives and experience spanning housing development, advocacy, real estate, higher education, finance, and workforce development. The Tri-County Regional Planning Commission hired Development Strategies, a St. Louis-based planning firm, to lead the process.

The project will examine housing trends and suitability for every population in the tri-county region, so this months-long planning process will have many opportunities for Greater Lansing residents to participate through virtual roundtables, community workshops, surveys, and more.

“We believe nearly a third of all houses in the tri-county region are cost-burdened, and we know high housing cost is a significant barrier in ensuring a stable and healthy lifestyle,” explained Snell. “This housing assessment will allow us to look at attainable housing for people and families of all incomes.”

This project is part of Tri-County’s ongoing work to ensure the economic vitality and meaningful development of the region’s urban and rural communities.
