Canada scraps Gordie Howe Bridge ribbon-cutting with U.S. over tariffs

Executive staff with the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority said they had been busy preparing the logistics for the upcoming ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. But Canada has canceled the joint celebration, citing trade threats made by President Trump.

The wildfire smoke that blanketed Michigan in recent days did more than turn skies hazy — it cost the state’s economy at least $4 billion in losses, according to a new analysis by the East Lansing-based Anderson Economic Group.

David Knezek Leaves Wayne County Commission to Lead Henry Ford College

David Knezek has officially stepped down from the Wayne County Commission, but his departure from public office comes as he takes on another major leadership role in the community. Knezek’s resignation as District 8 commissioner took effect July 17, clearing the way for him to serve as the seventh president of Henry Ford College in Dearborn. He began leading the college July 1 after its Board of Trustees selected him earlier this year.

Michigan bars big investors from buying more homes. Will it work?

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Tuesday signed a new law to bar large private investors from buying single-family homes in Michigan if they already own 100 or more in the state.  It’s part of a broad push to address an ongoing housing crisis by limiting the ability of private equity firms and other investors to buy homes that would otherwise be available to residents. A separate new federal law will bar purchases by firms that already own 350 or more houses nationwide. But in Michigan, even some members of Whitmer’s administration doubt the laws will have a major impact in the state, where private investors have bought up housing at a slower rate than other parts of the country. 

Michigan Supreme Court justices tour founding, civil rights exhibits at The Henry Ford

History informs the judicial branch’s understanding of the law, so it was a special treat Monday for three Michigan Supreme Court justices to get a private guided tour of The Henry Ford, visiting the iconic launching pad for the Selma to Montgomery marches of the 1960s and pouring over the original versions of America’s foundational documents. Opened in June, the Jackson Home exhibit is an intimate, relevant relic of the Civil Rights Movement, allowing patrons to walk through the dwelling of Dr. Sullivan Jackson and his wife Richie Jean Sherrod Jackson.
