Vendor applications for the 2025 Downtown Detroit Markets close tomorrow, May 28, and this is your last chance to get your questions answered before you apply! 

 
We’re hosting the final virtual info session tonight at 6 p.m. We’ll walk you through the application process, review vendor expectations and share tips to help your business stand out. 
 
This seasonal marketplace made possible by Bedrock, Downtown Detroit Partnership, Gilbert Family Foundation and TechTown Detroit is open to product-based small businesses, including pre-packaged food, artisan gifts, apparel and specialty items.

Our Customer Discovery workshop is two days away, and it’s a session you won’t want to miss! Attend this in-person workshop on Thursday, May 29 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at TechTown. 
 
Led by TechTown’s Senior Customer Discovery Specialist Shaun McGuire, participants will learn how to engage customers, identify pain points and develop a journey map to visualize the customer experience.

Are you struggling to secure funding for your business — or not even sure where to start? Join us on Monday, June 2 for Open City: Funding for Small Businesses – “Getting to Yes,” hosted by BUILD Institute and TechTown Detroit. Open City is a new series of panel discussions brought to the community by BUILD and TechTown! Attendees will leave understanding what really matters to funders,

 

 

how to match their needs with the right financing source and avoiding common mistakes that kill deals. Moderated by April Anderson of Good Cakes and Bakes, the panel will include Arlena Minter of Michigan Women Forward, Brittni Abiolu of VentureHue, Liz Blondy of Canine to Five and Onni Stone of BUILD Institute.

Our tenants and coworking members span numerous industries and have invaluable insights to share! This week, we’re hearing from Hamissi Mamba, CEO and co-founder of East African eatery Baobab Fare! Mamba runs the beloved Detroit-based restaurant with his wife, Nadia Nijimbere. Baobab Fare is a 2017 Hatch Detroit Contest winner and a James Beard Award semifinalist. In 2023, Mamba competed, and won, during an episode of the longtime

 

 

 

Food Network show, “Chopped.” With all his achievements, Mamba still has time to intentionally interact with the community he loves — and share a quick cooking tip with our subscribers! He says: “Make sure you have salt! This is what they told me when I was competing on ‘Chopped!'”

DNEP’s Chief Financial Officer Boot Camp

 

University of Michigan’s Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project (DNEP) is hosting a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Boot Camp next month! This three-week boot camp will take place 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 5, 12 and 19, at Newlab Detroit. This program is free but space is limitedso registration is required. If you are running your business without formal financial training, it’s time to stop outsourcing your finances, or learning everything 

 

 

 

the hard way! This program will equip you with the skills you need to build a financially sustainable organization, with 1:1 follow-up support. After completing the series, participants can sign up for free one-on-one assistance from DNEP’s accounting consultants from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business every Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., all summer long.
