Sparrow Initiative Leverages IT Innovation to Reduce Use, Risks of Opioids for Patients

The nation’s opioid crisis has been well-documented, increasing the public’s awareness of the risks associated with opioids.  Sparrow is using its innovation and IT expertise to decrease risk associated with opioids while treating the Patients’ pain and improving care.

The project utilizes an IT program to analyze risk for adverse effects so that Caregivers can provide enhanced monitoring for some Patients and reduce or eliminate when opioids are prescribed for high-risk individuals. It has significantly reduced the number of Patients who exhibit adverse effects and require life-saving measures after taking opioid medicine, reflecting an overall decline in the numbers of those receiving the drugs.

Tuesday April 3rd MBN visited Sparrow Hospital to discuss these efforts of this MOSS IT program with a Sparrow Nurse Researcher (Ashley Meyer) and IT specialist (Craig Havican).
MOSS stands for The Michigan Opioid Safety Score.
