The topic in Something to Think About is “Welfare Reform? Deja Vu All Over Again?” As the economy slowly grows, job requirements will no longer be waived for many food stamp recipients. Some states have begun to require work, education, training or volunteer benchmarks to qualify. This is a step toward what some have been advocating for years—we must have welfare reform. But with some of the presidential primary candidates raising issues of inequality and higher minimum wages, is there the political will to also tackle the issue of welfare reform on a national scale? Should there be changes to the welfare system? Will the states changing food stamp requirements start a trend to make changes in the entire system?
