Something to Think About – Social Security Disability, Part 2

PoliticsThe topic for today in Something to Think About is “Social Security Disability, the US and Michigan, Part 2.” Last week we looked at the problems with Social Security Disability from the national perspective. This week we will take a close look at Michigan. The basic problem is that the Social Security Disability fund will run dry in 2016. The President has proposed transferring $330 billion over 5 years from the Social Security Retirement Fund as a short term fix.

Many Republicans say they want changes in the program to reduce fraud and encourage disabled workers to re-enter the work force. Another proposed solution is to raise the social security tax rate and/or raise the income level for which the payroll deductions continue. But what about Michigan? Are there other issues not being addressed nationally that surface with a closer look at Michigan? Is it time to look at the 58 year old program in its entirety?
