The topic in Something to Think About is “Have We Saved the Planet?” On December 12, 2015, after two weeks of negotiations in Paris, more than 190 nations agreed on a plan to limit climate change, ending a decades long search for an accord requiring the world’s economies to regulate the emission of gases that scientists say are causing the earth to warm.
Whether or not you agree that climate change is occurring, and whether or not you agree that the world’s economies are causing a change, is not the subject of this discussion. Rather, it focuses on the agreement itself. The participants at the UN sponsored conference made two basic assumptions, 1) the earth is warming and, 2) the world’s economies release of gases is the cause. What are the provisions of the agreement? Will the agreement have an impact on the release of carbon dioxide that scientists are saying is causing global warming?
