Smile Hub | Michigan Is 2025’s 9th Best State for Research & Development

With nearly $940 billion spent on research and development in the U.S., the non-profit organization SmileHub today released new reports on the Best Charities for Research and the Best States for Research and Development in 2025.

To highlight the best states for research and development and those that don’t prioritize it as much, SmileHub compared each of the 50 states based on 17 key metrics. The data set ranges from researchers per capita to the number of research charities per capita to research and development spending per capita.

  • 9th – Share of STEM Professionals
  • 5th – Average Salary for Researchers

  • 10th – Research and Development Spending per Capita
