Skills Trade Challenges and Possible Funding Solutions

MEDA's Capitol Day, Skilled LaborJeffrey Mosher continues with coverage of Michigan Economic Developers Association (MEDA)’s Capitol Day, interviewing Stephanie Comai, Director of the Talent Investment Agency. Stephanie provides an update, highlighting Governor Snyder’s proposed budget, which increases the skills trade training fund that would help employers train current workers, new workers and upskill their staff. Also proposed in the budget is increasing funds for middle college and early college, so students can do career exploration and earn college credits while still in high school.

Stephanie also participated on the Skilled Labor Challenges Panel. She discussed the effort around the state to get workers the skills needed to participate in today’s economy. She highlighted the need for credentials that are required beyond high school for all the hot jobs that are going to pay well and provide opportunity for future growth. They also discussed how employers can train their staff and grow their own talent.
