WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Senate passed a bipartisan resolution led by U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI), Co-Chair of the Congressional Chemistry Caucus, recognizing October 19-25, 2025, as National Chemistry Week to celebrate the critical role chemistry plays in addressing challenges around the world. National Chemistry Week aims to highlight chemistry’s importance in fields such as medicine, sustainability, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
“Chemistry affects every aspect of our lives, from pioneering innovation in healthcare and technology, to bolstering our economy and creating good jobs,” said Senator Peters. “This bipartisan resolution celebrates the achievements of chemists nationwide and encourages the next generation of leaders to pursue careers in STEM.”
The resolution was introduced alongside fellow Congressional Chemistry Caucus Co-Chairs U.S. Senators Chris Coons (D-DE) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV).
National Chemistry Week is a community-based program of the American Chemical Society that unites students, professional communities, businesses, schools, and individuals in communicating the importance of chemistry to our quality of life. The event aims to motivate young people, especially women and members of underrepresented groups, to study science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and pursue science-related careers. This year’s National Chemistry Week theme was “The Hidden Life of Spices,” which explores the chemistry behind flavor, scent, and structure of spices. As Co-Chair of the Congressional Chemistry Caucus, Peters hosted a National Chemistry Week event where experts discussed how enzyme chemistry plays a role in beverage clarity, shelf life, and flavor development, connecting core chemistry to everyday experiences.
Peters helped create the Senate Chemistry Caucus in 2017 to provide a bipartisan forum to discuss issues dealing with the science of chemistry and America’s chemical business sector, which play a critical role in our economy and the creation of innovative products vital to everyday life.
