Whitmer Signs 20 Senate Bills, Bringing P.A. Count Up To 74 For 2025

The Governor last Tuesday announced signing 20 Senate bills and 16 House bills ahead of the end of 2025, including ban on electronic bots purchasing large bulks of concert and game tickets and permitting childcare centers to install anti-shooter lock systems.

“I’ll work with anyone to lower costs for Michiganders, protect consumers, keep kids safe, and cut red tape,” said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in Tuesday’s press release. “These commonsense bills will build on the progress we’ve made, make a difference for Michiganders, and help more individuals, families, and small businesses ‘make it’ in Michigan.”

Whitmer said “let’s keep getting it done,” her office stating that Tuesday’s bill-signings bring the total of “bipartisan bills” signed during her tenure as governor up to 1,575.

Cannabis Group Appeals Ruling Upholding State’s 24% Cannabis Tax

The state’s leading cannabis trade association filed an appeal of a ruling upholding the state’s 24% cannabis tax on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the Michigan Cannabis Industry Association (MCIA) said the appeal is intended to protect the will of Michigan voters.

“We stand by our belief that the Court of Claims did not make the right call when it issued an opinion that declined to block the Michigan Legislature’s unconstitutional 24% wholesale tax on cannabis from going into effect on New Year’s Day,” said MCIA spokesperson Rose Tantraphol.

Michigan Strategic Fund Approves Major Brownfield Projects in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo

Historically, The Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) Board approved two Transformational Brownfield Plan (TBP) grants for projects in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo that are expected to create more than 2,000 jobs, add 780 housing units and leverage more than $892.3 million in private investment.

The projects were approved during the MSF Board’s meeting in Lansing.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer said the projects will create more than 2,000 jobs and add hundreds of housing units by transforming brownfield sites into new developments.

Quentin L. Messer Jr., CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and chair of the MSF Board, said the approvals reflect the state’s “Make it in Michigan” economic development strategy and highlighted the TBP as a tool to attract business investment and talent while revitalizing communities.

In Grand Rapids, Fulmar Development Partners LLC received approval for a TBP incentive valued at up to $560.89 million to support a $795.8 million mixed-use riverfront development at Fulton and Market streets.

The project includes three towers — office, hotel and residential. The development will also include retail space, a luxury hotel, parking and more than 68,000 square feet of public green space along the riverfront.

The MSF Board also approved a TBP incentive package of about $54.6 million for a Kalamazoo project led by PlazaCorp Realty Advisors Inc., in partnership with the City of Kalamazoo Brownfield Redevelopment Authority.

The project includes redeveloping the Michigan Avenue Courthouse into a boutique hotel, constructing a mixed-use building at 619 Porter Street and rehabilitating the Speareflex Building for residential use.
