Historically, The Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) Board approved two Transformational Brownfield Plan (TBP) grants for projects in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo that are expected to create more than 2,000 jobs, add 780 housing units and leverage more than $892.3 million in private investment. The projects were approved during the MSF Board’s meeting in Lansing. Governor Gretchen Whitmer said the projects will create more than 2,000 jobs and add hundreds of housing units by transforming brownfield sites into new developments. Quentin L. Messer Jr., CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and chair of the MSF Board, said the approvals reflect the state’s “Make it in Michigan” economic development strategy and highlighted the TBP as a tool to attract business investment and talent while revitalizing communities. In Grand Rapids, Fulmar Development Partners LLC received approval for a TBP incentive valued at up to $560.89 million to support a $795.8 million mixed-use riverfront development at Fulton and Market streets. The project includes three towers — office, hotel and residential. The development will also include retail space, a luxury hotel, parking and more than 68,000 square feet of public green space along the riverfront. The MSF Board also approved a TBP incentive package of about $54.6 million for a Kalamazoo project led by PlazaCorp Realty Advisors Inc., in partnership with the City of Kalamazoo Brownfield Redevelopment Authority. The project includes redeveloping the Michigan Avenue Courthouse into a boutique hotel, constructing a mixed-use building at 619 Porter Street and rehabilitating the Speareflex Building for residential use. |
