According to the results, the most important topics of concern included inflation costs, availability of talent, economic outlook, taxes, tariffs, and/or fees, and low profit margins. Survey respondents also shared which policy areas they think the Chamber should focus on in the coming year, and the answers included creating vibrant and attractive business districts, addressing workforce development, and developing quality infrastructure and transformational projects.
Despite concerns about key topics and policies, business owners in the area are optimistic. According to the survey, 82% of respondents noted that the direction of the business climate in Genesee County is either improving or staying the same.
Comments shared in the survey show both optimism and room for growth.
One respondent said, “I have been pleasantly surprised in this region since moving my business here several years ago. Property is economical, and the blue-collar talent we have been able to find is very good.”
Meanwhile, another noted, “I see continued growth in many sectors like construction, manufacturing, automotive, etc., but have noticed restaurants, retail, and hospitality are struggling.”
Comments like these will guide the Chamber when advocating for different business sectors.
In the meantime, the Chamber plans to expand its member benefits, such as Money Saving Programs, which include discounts on office supplies, or Insurance Programs like its partnership with Accident Fund Insurance, a program that has helped Chamber members receive over $1.2 million in dividends since 1999. By expanding programs like these, the Chamber can help members offset the cost of doing business and increase their bottom line.
