WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) today released the following statement on his vote in favor of opening debate on legislation blocking the Department of Justice from supporting the health care lawsuit that’s set to be argued before the U.S. Supreme Court the week of November 10th. The lawsuit would dismantle the health care law and end protections for Michiganders with pre-existing medical conditions:
“The Trump Administration’s relentless pushing of this lawsuit – that would harm millions of Michiganders-is simply reckless. If the Trump Administration gets its way, we could go back to the days when insurance companies called the shots for Michiganders and could deny coverage to people with pre-existing health conditions; seniors could be charged more for prescription drugs; lifetime and annual limits on care could be imposed; being a woman could be considered a pre-existing condition; and Michiganders could be denied care or face financial ruin for being sick.
“This lawsuit could have devastating consequences – especially at a time when so many Michigan families are struggling to make ends meet during this pandemic. I was proud to vote to move forward with this legislation – and I’m going to continue fighting to protect Michiganders with pre-existing conditions and expand access to quality, affordable health care.”
