Highlights Efforts to Support & Protect USPS Operations
LANSING, MI – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) today delivered remarks at the Postal Service’s 245th Anniversary Celebration in Lansing. As the United States Postal Service continues to confront numerous challenges due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Peters highlighted his efforts to support the agency by ensuring service can continue and postal workers across the nation can still carry out the agency’s mission. Peters also discussed his work to protect the Postal Service against efforts to dismantle their vital operations.
“Now more than ever, the Postal Service is a critical lifeline for seniors, small business owners and folks across Michigan who rely on postal workers to deliver their prescriptions, reach their customers and connect with distant loved ones,” said Senator Peters, Ranking Member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. “We cannot overcome the challenges posed by this unprecedented public health crisis without our postal workers. I will continue fighting to ensure the next Coronavirus relief package includes the funding they need to continue doing their jobs safely and effectively.”
Peters has led numerous efforts to support the Postal Service. Earlier this month, Peters called for additional funding in the next Coronavirus relief legislation to help the key agency offset losses incurred due to the pandemic. Peters has also conducted stringent oversight to ensure the agency does not reduce critical services for all Americans during the Coronavirus pandemic. Furthermore, Peters this past April announced his COVID-19 Heroes Fund proposal that would provide frontline workers, including postal workers, premium pay for the 2020 calendar year.

Peters has prioritized his efforts to keep the agency afloat by ensuring service can continue and postal workers across the nation have the resources to do their jobs safely and effectively. Peters will also discuss his work to protect the Postal Service’s mission against efforts to dismantle their vital operations.

While the Coronavirus pandemic and resulting economic crisis have led to serious financial uncertainty for the Postal Service, Peters has championed efforts to support the Postal Service through financial relief and has conducted oversight to ensure the agency does not reduce critical services for all Americans.
