Older Worker Job and Career Fair – 50 Years of Age and Older

Economic DevelopmentChris spoke with Capital Area Michigan Works! CEO, Edythe Hatter-Williams, about the Plus 50 Job and Career Fair, which was slated for September 17, 2015.

Additional Information:

  • With more and more application processes and career fairs turning digital, it’s forcing job seekers to become accustomed to using computers and the Internet.
    • This may not seem like an issue for younger generations who have grown up using technology, but it can be an inconvenience and difficult for job seekers who aren’t extremely proficient with technology, particularly job seekers who are 50 years old or older.
  • Although older workers are assets to employers, and bring both experience and unique sets of skills, they are put at a detriment if they have trouble with online application processes.
  • Lansing Community College (LCC)’s Plus 50 Job and Career Fair is an upcoming free event for adults who are 50 years old and older and looking for a new job or opportunities to gain new skills.
  • The LCC Plus 50 Job and Career Fair will take place on Thursday, September 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Capital Area Michigan Works! Lansing Service Center, located at 2110 S. Cedar St., Lansing, MI 48910.
  • The event, which features job search workshops and the chance to meet employers, is created to specifically help older workers.
    • It is designed to help tackle both the disadvantages older workers have with the ongoing trend of moving the job search digital, as well as offers a traditional in-person career fair.
  • To help with job searching, the career fair includes a couple career networking workshops, resume reviews, an application know-how workshop, a job connections workshop, and career and academic advising.
    • Participants are required to attend one morning workshop for entry into the job fair. The detailed schedule of events is available at www.lcc.edu/lifelong/encore/.
  • It is a competitive job market, which means sometimes older workers need to explore continuing education to become qualified for positions, including additional training, degree completion or certificate completion.
    • To help with educational and career counseling, LCC Career and Employment Services representatives will be on-site for one-on-one career advising.
  • The LCC Plus 50 Job and Career Fair is being held in coordination with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employ Older Workers Week, which occurs the last full week in September.
  • The U.S. Department of Labor recognizes the demographic talent shift our nation is experiencing with the median age of population rising. National Employ Older Workers Week is in place to increase the awareness of the important role older workers play in the workforce.
