A new generational investment from Ford Motor Company is positioning the state to remain a leader in transportation technology. On Feb. 13, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer joined Ford leaders at Ford Ion Park as the automaker announced an investment of more than $3.5 billion to construct a 2.5 million-square-foot EV battery manufacturing facility in Marshall. BlueOval Battery Park Michigan will manufacture batteries used in several of the company’s key EVs.

EGLE Releases Draft Materials for the National Electric Infrastructure Formula Program
 
 

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) has released a draft version of the National Electric Vehicle (NEVI) Formula Program; the funding opportunity stems from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that will provide funding to states to strategically deploy fast charging EV infrastructure and establish an interconnected network to facilitate data collection, access, and reliability. Through the program, The State of Michigan will receive approximately $110 million through 2026 to expand and innovate Michigan’s EV infrastructure.

Newlab Chosen as Tenant for Michigan Central Book Depository
 
 

Ford has announced that Newlab will oversee the collaborative work of entrepreneurs and innovators at the reimagined Book Depository building within Michigan Central, opening this spring. Hundreds of employees from a number of companies will collaborate on mobility solutions addressing areas such as electrification and aerial technology. The facility will offer purpose-built workspaces and prototyping labs to speed the development process.

 
 
 
 
The University of Michigan Receives $15M DOT Grant for Work on Connected, Automated Vehicles
 
 

The University of Michigan (U-M) will continue to lead regional efforts aimed at transitioning the nation to connected and automated vehicles, bolstered by a new $15 million, five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). That grant renews and expands the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation, based in Ann Arbor and led by U-M. The partnership now brings together nine colleges and universities to focus on significantly advancing the U.S. transportation system with emerging technologies that address safety and sustainability.

 
 
 
 
Applications Open for Mobility Public-Private Partnership and Programming (MP4) Grants
 
 

The Michigan Office of Future Mobility and Electrification (OFME) has launched a special grant opportunity for public-private partnerships and current or future mobility programs and initiatives that address emerging mobility systems across all transportation modes (air, ground, marine, off-road) throughout the State of Michigan. Eligible expenses that MP4 grant funding could support include program operations, staff, equipment, software tools, prototype and first-run manufacturing, marketing, and pilot testing.

The City of Detroit’s Office of Mobility Innovation (OMI) is engaging with Detroit residents to understand how self-driving vehicles can best meet their needs. OMI wants to hear your thoughts about self-driving vehicles.
