Lansing, MI – October 1, 2020 -Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently awarded Todd Martin Youth Leadership a $3,000 grant to support youth literacy initiatives. This local grant award is part of more than $4 million in grants awarded this fall to nearly 850 nonprofit organizations, libraries and schools across the 46 states that Dollar General serves.

“TMYL is so grateful to the Dollar General Literacy Foundation for their generous support of the under-resourced youth we serve through our virtual tutoring program. This support is needed now more than ever as we walk alongside our families to navigate virtual learning.”
TMYL has provided academic tutoring to youth in 3rd – 12th grades since 2008. Our expanded partnership with the Lansing School District (LSD) has resulted in an increased need for this program; we anticipate tutoring between 55 – 75 students in the 20-21 school year. We seek to expand this program while using popular technology such as web-based “apps” that help the students increase their reading and math literacy. In 2019, TMYL provided 2,498 hours of tutoring to nearly 50 students in LSD. The funds provided from Dollar General will be utilized to expand the number of youth we are able to serve and support this year.
“This year, many teachers, libraries and literacy organizations are facing new challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s chief executive officer and Dollar General Literacy Foundation board member. “Despite the unprecedented obstacles, we admire the tremendous efforts and commitments from educators as they work to provide students with the tools they need to develop their literacy skills. We hope these funds will help support their plans to advance learning and deliver quality instruction in our hometown communities.”
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is proud to support initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $186 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 12 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.
About TMYL
TMYL exists to prepare young people – especially those from under-resourced families and communities – for success as individuals and as active, responsible citizens, through innovative tennis, education, life skills, and leadership development programming. Each day, TMYL lives out this mission through various programs, including academic tutoring, Friday Night Tennis, after school tennis, and Summer Tennis, Life Skills, and Leadership program. TMYL partners with various organizations and institutions around the community to ensure that we meet kids where they are and meet their needs; these partners include Lansing Parks and Recreation, the Lansing School District, and Michigan State University Center for Community Engaged Learning.
In 2019, TMYL served 4,030 participants, provided 15,518 hours of physical activity and 2,498 hours of tutoring. Each year we work to serve more youth and serve them deeply to ensure that we meet the individual needs of the child and their family.
