MTRAC and MEDC Promoting Innovation

Chris Holman caught up with Denise Graves, University Relations Director, with MEDC, (Michigan Economic Development Corporation), recently to discuss MTRAC and MEDC’s role in the program.

• What is the MTRAC program and how is the MEDC involved?

• The Michigan Translational Research and Commercialization (MTRAC) program was originally designed to bring the ideas and products of university researchers off the shelf and out of the lab and develop them for real-world use through the collaboration between universities, research centers and industry.

• In fiscal year 2016, MTRAC funded 95 projects, created 18 startups, secured 11 licenses to industry and helped acquire nearly $32.5 million in follow-on funding for its clients.

• In the interview, hear what some of the advantages of moving both the U-M advanced transportation program and Michigan Tech’s advanced materials program to statewide innovation hubs. Along with more about the MTRAC Innovation Hub announcement at U-M and Michigan Tech.
