(Flint, MI.-December 15, 2021) The Mass Transportation Authority, United Way of Genesee County, and Huntington Bank have partnered to grant the wishes of non-profit agencies in need of bus passes this holiday season.

MTA held a press conference at 10 am today, at their administration building at 1401 S. Dort Hwy to present the bus passes to four non-profit agencies in Genesee County. The bus passes are courtesy of the United Way Emergency Bus Pass Program and the Work Force Development program. Recognizing the transportation barrier our community faces, the MTA and United Way launched this program for nonprofits in need of quality transportation for clients. MTA, Huntington Bank, and the United Way have donated to the program to start the annual campaign. Over 10,000 passes will be given out during the year.

MTA General Manager and CEO Ed Benning shared “MTA is committed to ensuring transportation is not a barrier for Genesee County residents in need of services from local non-profits. Often, due to limited budgets, non-profit organizations struggle to be able to purchase bus passes for their clients. The United Way Emergency Bus Pass Program seeks to solve that issue. We are sending out a challenge to the community to keep the pass program going and we are hopeful that agencies, individuals, foundations, and organizations will step up to help our community by donating to the pass program, so residents can continue accessing critical services.”

The Emergency Bus Pass Program is available to 501c3 organizations whose clients need transportation for shelter, access to fresh foods, employment, and medical appointments. “Nonprofits across our county are working hard to meet the needs of their clients. We are grateful for the partnership with MTA to help ease the burden of accessing high-quality transportation,” said James Gaskin, CEO United Way of Genesee County. Interested agencies should contact Mary Bishop (mbishop@unitedwaygenesee.org) for more details on the new application process.

The agencies that will have their bus pass wishes granted are Catholic Charities, St. Luke’s New Life Center, Salvation Army, and the Shelter of Flint.
