Wednesday afternoon at the Mackinac Policy Conference, Mike Duggan delivered a speech no Democrat or Republican could ever give. He made it clear we are trapped in a broken system fueled by toxic politics.
Now, Mike Duggan is running for governor as an Independent. In his keynote, Mike talked about how his approach has never been about politics. From his time leading the Detroit Medical Center to rebuilding trust and efficiency in city government, Mike has always been about listening, fixing what’s broken and delivering results. Watch the full keynote address below:
Now, the focus is on education. Our teachers, students and families aren’t failing. The system is. Here’s what he laid out:
- 60% of Michigan’s 4th graders can’t read at grade level
- Michigan’s high school career-tech programs have vanished from 41% of districts
- Michigan went from 19th in the nation in education outcomes to 44th
This isn’t a people problem. It’s a systems problem. And it won’t be solved by more partisan gridlock. Mike is ready to fix it. He’s calling for:
- A Marshall Plan for reading
- A rebuilt, modern career and technical education system
- Early childhood investment
- Accountability for superintendents and school leaders
- A system that puts results ahead of partisanship
