Michiganders Encouraged to Volunteer for 9/11 National Day of Service

Michigan Community Service Commission funding 19 volunteer projects

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Community Service Commission will support 19 Michigan organizations hosting volunteer projects for the 9/11 National Day of Service and encourages all Michiganders to serve.

Volunteers will serve veterans, military personnel, and first responders and also focus on environmental improvement, disaster preparedness, and support youth education. 

The projects will engage 2,800 volunteers who will serve more than 7,000 hours.

“Serving others is a wonderful way to unite individuals and strengthen communities to restore the spirit of kind-heartedness that followed the 9/11 tragedy,” said MCSC Executive Director Ginna Holmes. “We encourage everyone to find a way to volunteer and make a difference.”

The Michigan Community Service Commission issued nearly $10,000 in grants ranging from $100 to $1,000. Funding has also been provided by AmeriCorps.

 The grant recipients are:

  • Women’s Center of Greater Lansing, Inc
  • International Academy, Days of Service
  • United Way of Bay County
  • United Way of Genesee County- Flint National Service Accelerator
  • Peace Tree Parks
  • We 3 Queens Community Outreach
  • West Michigan Environmental Action Council
  • Lifeline Ministries No. 2
  • Schoolcraft Conservation District
  • Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan
  • Ironwood Theatre, Inc
  • Otsego County United Way
  • All for One
  • United Way of Marquette County
  • Wayne State University Center for Urban Studies – AmeriCorps Urban Safety

 The 9/11 National Day of Service projects are happening in communities across the state, some of which need volunteers. BACKGROUND: The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) utilizes service as a strategy to address the state’s most pressing issues and empowers volunteers to strengthen communities. In 2023-2024, the MCSC is granting more than $21 million in federal funds to local communities for volunteer programs and activities.
