State Representatives Harris and McFall as Legislators of the Year
LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Municipal League has named Representatives Mike Harris and Mike McFall as Legislators of the Year. Representatives Harris, R-Clarkston, and McFall, D-Hazel Park, received the honor on March 18 at the League’s 2025 Capital Conference in Lansing.
This award is presented each year to lawmakers for their instrumental actions in the Michigan State Legislature on behalf of local communities. These individuals are recognized for their efforts in the passage of legislation that will benefit local governments or for their efforts in fighting consistently to support local government.
“We appreciate the advocacy of Representatives Harris and McFall on behalf of local government,” said Dan Gilmartin, CEO and Executive Director of the Michigan Municipal League. “During difficult times, their ability to reach across the aisle and come to consensus is an example of leadership and partnership.”
Representative Harris has proudly served Michigan’s 52nd House District since May 2022, representing portions of Oakland County, including the cities of Lake Angelus and Clarkston, Independence Township and parts of Springfield and Waterford townships. He is affiliated with the Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners, the Clarkston and Waterford Chambers of Commerce and the Clarkston Rotary, reflecting his ongoing commitment to service and engagement.
With a distinguished career in public safety, Representative Harris has been a vital partner in the League’s efforts to strengthen municipal services. His instrumental role in advancing legislation for Michigan’s participation in the federal Ground Emergency Medical Transportation (GEMT) Program is targeted to bring millions of dollars in reimbursement to locally based emergency medical agencies, strengthening critical public safety services and enhancing the wellbeing of Michigan residents.
“I’m very humbled to receive the Legislator of the Year award,” said Harris. “MML has been a fantastic partner with their guidance and insight. My background in law enforcement has led me to have a passion for public safety. It took bipartisan effort to get the GEMT through the finish line, which is a great piece of legislation and a huge accomplishment.”
Representative McFall is serving his second term, proudly representing the 14th District. This district includes parts of Oakland and Wayne counties, covering Center Line, Madison Heights, Hazel Park and a portion of Warren. Before joining the Legislature, he served on the Hazel Park City Council from 2019 to 2022.
In the House, Representative McFall served as the Majority Vice Chair of the Insurance and Financial Services Committee. His priorities include mental health services, public education, and economic development, ensuring a brighter future for all Michiganders. As the sponsor of HB 5695, he championed legislation to secure Michigan’s participation in the GEMT Program.
“I’m flattered and honored to be given this award,” said McFall. “Coming from local government, I understand the trials and tribulations of filling budget gaps, and that’s exactly what the GEMT Program will help do.”
