Michigan Mobility and Electrification Report Late-March 2022

ofme-230LG Energy Solution Leading the Battery Evolution from Holland, Michigan

This week, LG Energy Solution (LGES) announced a $1.7 billion investment to quintuple plant capacity in Holland, providing a strong pipeline to produce battery components in Michigan while further boosting the state’s leadership in the electric vehicle and high-tech manufacturing industries.

The state-of-the-art Michigan plant will use the most advanced and efficient battery cell manufacturing processes. Particularly, the facility will manufacture the company’s new long cell design batteries with improved energy density thanks to cutting-edge technologies that allow engineers to more fully utilize the space within the battery pack. The long cell design batteries are expected to advance EV’s driving range and ESS’s energy storage, and at the same time, simplify the overall structure of a battery pack.

The LGES expansion announcement comes mere months after GM announced its historic $7 billion investment in the state, which includes up to $2.5 billion to build Ultium’s third U.S. battery cell plant in the city of Lansing and Delta Township. GM acted as a key partner in bringing LG to Michigan; its latest Ultium joint venture with LGES is expected to grow the state’s global leadership in EV and advanced battery production.

New Funding Grants to Enable Real-World Testing of Mobility Solutions at the Detroit Smart Parking Lab

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced two new Michigan Mobility Funding Platform grants, awarded to mobility companies Arrive and WiTricity. They will receive a combined $85,000 to deploy and test mobility projects at the Detroit Smart Parking Lab (DSPL) to help address last-mile mobility barriers and enhance electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure.

Announced in August 2021, the DSPL is located at the Assembly Garage in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood and provides an open innovation platform and real-world testing site for parking-related mobility, logistics, and EV charging technologies. Established by Bedrock, Bosch, Ford Motor Company, and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), the DSPL is operated by the American Center for Mobility (ACM) and offers a collaborative, neutral platform for mobility innovators to examine ways to improve customer experiences as well as the efficient movement of vehicles and goods in defined spaces.

“Michigan is well-positioned to lead the charge on solving the mobility challenges of today and the future,” said Trevor Pawl, Chief Mobility Officer with the Office of Future Mobility and Electrification (OFME). “We are proud to support companies working at the Detroit Smart Parking Lab, as their projects are helping to define what the future of mobility could look like both here in Michigan and beyond our borders.”

Magna International Announces New EV Center in Troy for Electric Powertrain Conversion Production

Magna International has been working on a powertrain system that would convert gasoline-powered pickup trucks to all-electric vehicles. The company has now announced it will begin production of its EtelligentForce system at a new EV center opening in Troy, MI.

EtelligentForce is designed for high-payload vehicles. It features Magna’s eDrive technology at the front and its eBeam – which replaces traditional beam axles, and accommodates existing suspension and brake systems – at the rear.

“EtelligentForce comes at a pivotal time – particularly in the North American auto industry where pickup trucks are at their height of popularity and one of the last segments to become fully electric,” said Tom Rucker, President of Magna Powertrain. “The beauty of this powerful BEV system is that it delivers the environmental benefits of an electric powertrain while maintaining the capability and utility of conventional three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks.

Consumers Energy to Install 200 New Public EV Chargers in Michigan by End of 2023

Consumers Energy will be installing 200 public EV chargers throughout Michigan over the next two years. Half of the stations will feature fast chargers, which can fully power a car’s battery in about 30 minutes, while the other half will be “level two” chargers, which restore a vehicle’s battery in six to eight hours. With these builds, the utility company estimates it will help power one million EVs by 2030.

“We serve most of the lower peninsula and so our goal is to build out that complete network that really helps to connect the dots for people,” said Brian Wheeler, Media Relations Manager of Consumers Energy. “Whether you live in southeast Michigan or west Michigan, as you’re traveling across the state, we want to make sure that there’s a charging network in place for you.”
