This multi-year initiative with Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Michigan Office of Future Mobility and Electrification (OFME) along with Ontario’s Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Network (AVIN) will identify cross-border challenges and determine solutions with mobility technologies. It will also explore the economic, social and environmental benefits from increasing joint mobility technology efforts between Michigan and Ontario, working to create more equitable, affordable and environmentally friendly technology solutions.

“Michigan is continuing to lead the way in developing, testing and deploying the solutions that will drive the future of transportation, and we are excited to partner with the AVIN team in Ontario to secure the Michigan-Ontario border as the place where cross-border innovations in transportation are born,” said Whitmer. “Through collaborations like this we can build on Michigan’s strength in automotive manufacturing while creating an environment for technology and mobility-related companies to thrive and grow.”

Read the Latest from MEDC: Model T to EV: Michigan’s Role in the Future of Automotive

Michigan is a longstanding leader of the automotive industry, with notable innovations like the assembly line and Ford Motor Company’s Model T in 1908. Present day, the state is taking its talents to shape the future of transportation, looking toward developing and manufacturing electric vehicles.

Leading the state toward its EV goals are partnerships, educational programs and highly skilled workers. Ford recently showed its dedication to EV battery R&D with its new Global Battery Center of Excellence, investing $185 million in the development of more affordable and efficient EV batteries. Likewise, General Motors is working on its first all-electric pickup truck and has its first electric vehicle assembly plant set to begin production later in the year.

Michigan also ranks No.1 for its engineering talent and is a hub for EV testing thanks to partnerships with organizations like the American Center for Mobility and University of Michigan’s Mcity.
