Detroit, June 7, 2021 – From Grand Rapids to Detroit and Traverse City to Monroe, parents across the state of Michigan will be focused on ensuring their children avoid learning loss more than ever this summer. In support of parents’ efforts, experts at Sumdog, a math and spelling practice app, are encouraging families to engage in activities that will allow children to learn while having fun, whether in their own backyard, or on a road trip across the state.
The achievement gap has grown significantly during the pandemic across all grade levels, with many students falling behind. Here are a few things students can do this summer to get back on track:
- Adventure to a local library and choose books about native Michigan flora and fauna, including plants, animals and bugs. Learn about where to find them and what they eat, and see if you can locate them in your current surroundings.
- When it rains, read stories from sunnier locations. Treat the rain as nature’s reminder to curl up with a good book.
- Keep a daily journal of each day’s activities. This encourages students to keep up on their reading and writing skills.
- Download educational apps, like Sumdog, a math and spelling practice app for K-8 students. Sumdog is currently being provided entirely free of charge during school time for all Michigan students. It is also completely free at all hours for low income families in Michigan whose schools are enrolled in the program.
“Finding ways to stay engaged during the summer months can be difficult,” said Sumdog CEO Andrew Hall. “We are encouraging families to get creative with learning, and we’re offering the Sumdog Digital Equity Solution to make learning fun and easy on-the-go.”
By allowing students to work at their own pace, the Sumdog app gives them confidence to make progress and improve. It can be used on laptops or tablets and be taken on the go, which is perfect for road trips in the summer months.
