MICHauto | Navigating Tariffs to Strengthen Michigan’s Global Competitiveness

Ensuring Michigan Remains the Global Epicenter for Automotive and Mobility

On June 9, at the Global Epicenter of Mobility Partner Meeting, Bernard Swiecki, Vice President of Mobility and Research at the Detroit Regional Partnership, moderated a discussion featuring Glenn Stevens Jr., Executive Director of MichAuto at the Detroit Regional Chamber, and Edgar Faler, Managing Director of Financial Analytics and Industry Strategy at the Center for Automotive Research to discuss how tariffs in the automotive industry are reshaping the landscape.

The Detroit Regional Chamber’s latest Michigan Voter Poll, released in May 2025, includes questions on the economy, inflation, tariffs, and the mobility industry. The poll found that a majority of every voting demographic agrees that allowing China to become the world leader in EV manufacturing would harm Michigan’s economy; however, there are vastly different views by political party.

General Motors Invests in Michigan

MichAuto Executive Director Glenn Stevens Jr. joined WJR to discuss General Motors’ decision to bring back manufacturing to the U.S. Aside from bringing manufacturing back to the U.S., this decision will support economic growth, create jobs, enhance supply chain resilience, and foster innovation.

MichAuto investor General Motors is shifting the focus of its Orion Assembly plant from electric vehicles to gasoline-powered pickups as part of a broader $4 billion investment that will ultimately increase production in the U.S. This decision addresses weak EV sales and rising tariffs, enhancing its competitive edge in the industry. MichAuto Executive Director Glenn Stevens Jr. provided insights on the key takeaway resulting from this decision.
