More Economic Sectors Set to Reopen

Governor Whitmer signed Executive Orders 2020-114 and 2020-115 today, allowing more regions and economic sectors to reopen. Regions 6 and 8 – which include much of northern Michigan and all of the Upper Peninsula – will move to Phase 5 of the governor’s MI Safe Start Plan starting June 10, which includes the reopening of salons, movie theaters and gyms.

Also included in Phase 5 are indoor social gatherings and organized events of up to 50 people and outdoor gatherings and events for up to 250. On June 15, personal services including hair, massages and nails will reopen statewide. While regions, 1 through 5 and 7, will remain in Phase 4 under today’s executive orders, it is expected the entire state will advance to Phase 5 in the coming weeks.

Michigan Small Businesses Use MEDC Crowdfunding Program in COVID-19 Recovery Efforts

More than 100 small businesses around Michigan will utilize the MEDC’s MI Local Biz crowdfunding program in June to support reopening efforts across the state. MEDC will provide a total of $500,000 in matching grants to help the businesses as they work to recover from the negative economic impacts of the COVID-19 crisis.

Launched in May, the MI Local Biz program builds on the MEDC’s successful Public Spaces Community Places (PSCP) program, allowing a small business to utilize donation-based crowdfunding through Michigan-based Patronicity’s platform and to receive a 1:1 matching grant from MEDC of up to $5,000. Funds provide businesses with working capital in order to maintain operations through the COVID-19 crisis.
