Established in 2004, Black Business Month is celebrated each August to recognize Black-owned businesses across the nation. Small businesses are the backbone of the economy, and in Michigan, the MEDC is committed to providing the support, resources and opportunities they need to grow and thrive. According to Opportunity Insight’s Track the Recovery,

January 2022 saw small business revenue in Michigan increase by 24% compared to January 2020, while the nation experienced a 6.9% increase over the same period. In celebration of Black Business Month, MEDC highlights growth opportunities, initiatives, and recent success stories for Black-owned businesses in Michigan.

Michigan Designers: Join Us at Men’s Fashion Trade Fair in Italy
 
 

Join the Michigan exhibit at Pitti Uomo June 13-16, 2023, in Florence, Italy. Pitti Uomo is the world’s leading men’s fashion trade fair specifically focused on B2B buyer engagement with exhibiting brands showcasing menswear and accessories. In June 2022, the show celebrated its 50th year and brought in more than 10,600 buyers, including 4,200 international buyers from 70 countries outside of Italy. Selected Michigan designers will have the opportunity to present collections to international buyers in a dynamic space, supported by MEDC, Design Core Detroit and College for Creative Studies. Deadline to apply is Sept. 1. Matchmaking Mission to Aeromart Toulouse
 
 

Join MEDC’s Pure Michigan Business Connect team in France for Aeromart Toulouse. For over 25 years, Aeromart Toulouse has been the place for supply chain, engineering, fabrication teams and suppliers to meet through pre-arranged, one-on-one meetings. The event is a venue for international A&D suppliers to connect through BCI Aerospace signature matchmaker. Participating companies will have the opportunity to meet with major buyers such as Airbus, ATR, Daher, Latecoere, Safran, Thales and many more. Over 1,000 firms, 16,000 B2B meetings and 45 countries will be represented. Space is limited so register by Nov. 1. POTUS Joins Gov. Whitmer Virtually for Signing of CHIPS Act Executive Directive
 
 

On August 2, 2022, Gov. Whitmer signed an executive directive guiding the implementation of the CHIPS Act at Hemlock Semiconductor Operations (HSC), based in Michigan. Whitmer was joined virtually by President Biden, elected officials and semiconductor industry leaders. The executive directive marks a vital step toward increasing domestic chip production near automakers and other manufacturers helping to spur innovation, reduce inefficiencies and avoid costly delays.
