Mike Maddox shared his story of running and operating a company called ASK, an IT and cyber security company, which experienced 10x growth over 10 years, but also faced chaos and frustration, and eventually implemented the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) to get the business healthy and aligned, and was later acquired by a large multinational company
01:14.
Mike’s experience with EOS and his acquisition led him to start coaching other businesses, and he eventually got his franchise to coach clients, with the goal of helping other business owners achieve successful exits and grow their business value
04:44.
Brian, a partner with Washington Avenue Advisors, shared his motivation for helping business owners with their valuation and exit, which is to see stories like Mike’s and help owners have successful exits, allowing them to pursue their passions and reap the benefits of their hard work, and he achieved the Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA) designation to be more intentional about delivering this service
07:29.
Understanding the eight drivers of business value and the six keys of operational success can help business owners make informed decisions and potentially increase their company’s value
10:24
Focusing on a unique aspect of a business, such as monopoly control, can lead to competitive advantages and better margins, as seen in Stephanie Breedlove’s story of growing her company to $9 million in revenue
11:31
Building a strong “moat” around a business by developing a unique skill or service can make it more valuable and attractive to potential buyers, as demonstrated by Stephanie’s sale of her company for $54 million
17:40
To set a company apart, it’s essential to focus on the customers and understand how they view the business, rather than just relying on knowledge
22:08.
Rod’s company, After Mail, was sold for $35 million due to its growth potential, which was driven by its ability to help companies archive their communications, a need that arose after the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation
23:03.
The eight drivers of valuation can be maximized by achieving alignment on vision, getting traction in the business, and maintaining a healthy business, which can be accomplished through the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS)
27:41.
Who should attend in October if you missed the June event?
Open-minded and growth-oriented owners and leaders of businesses with 10 or more employees, who want to take their company from good to great!
The series of workshops will continue, with the next one scheduled for October 17th, and participants will have the opportunity to assess their company’s score in the eight drivers compared to industry peers
00:04.
Maximizing the eight drivers of valuation can be achieved by getting alignment on vision, traction, and health in a business, allowing companies to increase their multiples and achieve their goals
01:18.
The Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) is a simple and effective way to implement operational efficiency, focusing on six foundational areas, including vision, people, and data, to help businesses become healthy and strong
02:09.
Achieving Traction
Vision without traction is considered hallucination, and having clear objectives for the business in a 90-day world is crucial for achieving traction
10:00
The L10 meeting is a simple yet effective tool for solving issues, where the leadership team meets to discuss what’s on track, off track, and how to solve issues
10:38
Exit Strategy
To optimize valuation and plan for exit, business owners need to define what exit means for them and be transparent with their employees about their plans, which can be built into their vision
15:14
A business owner should think about the next person’s journey when selling their business, and having a buyer who is excited about the business can drive value, as seen in Stephanie’s example with 7 million subscribers
19:25
Building a Valuable Business
To build a valuable business, it’s essential to consider operational efficiency and capacity to support growth, such as a coffee shop handling increased demand for muffins
20:20
Business owners can track their valuation over time by using tools like benchmarking their industry, financials, and scores in eight drivers, and retaking the questionnaire to identify priorities for improvement
26:05
Valuation and Growth
Many business owners, such as doctors and dentists, do not realize the value of their businesses and often think only in terms of revenue and income
30:46
To create a valuable business, owners need to think differently and set up their business so that any investor can buy it, not just someone in the same industry
32:11
Conclusion
The event is wrapping up, with lunch being served and an opportunity for attendees to provide feedback and ask questions, with Matthew Per available for further information
