LANSING, Mich.—(July 21, 2025)—The Lansing region continues to cement its reputation as a hub for innovation and technology-driven growth with the arrival of Sawport, a dynamic fintech startup that has just opened a virtual office at the Technology Innovation Center in downtown East Lansing. Backed with strong support from Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP), the Lansing Regional SmartZone, and the MSU Research Foundation, Sawport’s move signals more than just new business—it represents a commitment to job creation, regional investment, and strategic partnerships that fuel the local economy.

“The Conquer Accelerator gave us the foundation we needed to take our fintech vision to the next level,” said Charles Oligbo, CEO of Sawport. “Being surrounded by mission-aligned organizations like MSUFCU and the MSU Research Foundation made East Lansing an easy choice. We’re excited to grow here.”

“Sawport’s decision to expand into East Lansing reinforces what we already know: our region is a powerhouse for innovation and entrepreneurship,” said Bob Trezise, President and CEO of LEAP. “This move is a testament to the strength of our SmartZone ecosystem, our world-class talent pipeline, and the collective drive of our partners to grow the next generation of tech leaders right here in the Lansing region. We are proud to support Sawport as they develop cutting-edge fintech solutions and help shape Michigan’s digital future.”

Specializing in digital solutions for community financial institutions, Sawport is focused on collaborating with local credit unions and banks to deliver dynamic fintech products that increase access and engagement across Michigan’s financial landscape leveraging AI to provide virtual branch services. Their decision to locate in East Lansing stems from the region’s robust entrepreneurial infrastructure and a powerful network of partners dedicated to helping startups succeed.

“Attracting high-growth companies like Sawport reflects the strength of our regional partnerships,” said Jeff Wesley, Executive Director of Ventures at the MSU Research Foundation. “With some of the state’s most comprehensive early-stage programming, including the Conquer Accelerator, plus access to our venture investments and incubator spaces, and with additional support from LEAP, we’re building a connected ecosystem that helps startups grow—and stay—in mid-Michigan.”

As a new tenant of the East Lansing Technology Innovation Center, Sawport will continue working closely with LEAP and local partners to create high-tech jobs, engage with Michigan State University’s top-tier talent, and pursue strategic investment opportunities that benefit the broader region.

“As home to one of the world’s top research universities, the City of East Lansing is pleased to welcome Sawport to our business community,” said Robert Belleman, East Lansing City Manager. “Their unique services are on the cutting-edge of financial technology and represent the kind of innovation the City is excited to attract.”

As East Lansing and the greater Lansing region continue to attract tech-forward companies, Sawport’s expansion is a powerful example of how coordinated efforts among LEAP, the SmartZone, and local partners are transforming the area into a destination for 21st-century business.

“Sawport represents the kind of innovation and talent we’re proud to support through the Lansing Regional SmartZone,” said Abbie Tykocki, Board Chair of the Lansing Regional SmartZone. “Our mission is to connect companies with the right resources, partners, and people to grow in the Lansing region—and Sawport is a prime example of what’s possible when we invest in startups with vision.”
