Wednesday June 12, 2024, MBN’s Jeffrey Mosher hit the road and caught the VIP Q & A Workshop session following a Leadership Talk. This is video number 2 of 3 from that day.

Watch Matthew Pollard’ ‘The Rapid Growth Guy’s Q&A from REO Town! Hear tips on sales, storytelling & building a business that’s ready to sell in the YouTube video shared below:

In this video you catch a can’t miss event where the gathering in REO Town heard from Matthew Pollard, the Rapid Growth Guy. Mr. Pollard was kind enough to stick around and answer several questions for the set hosted by Reuben Levinsohn of Washington Avenue Advisors in this nearly 50 minute session.

The Importance of Business Valuation and Systemization

  • Business owners often struggle to articulate their value and differentiate themselves from others, which can hinder their ability to grow their company’s value
  • Many businesses fail to niche down and attribute their success to the founder’s passion, rather than creating a system that can be replicated by others
  • Having a system in place, such as a sales system, is crucial for growing valuation and making a business sellable, rather than relying on the founder’s natural ability
  • Knowing the value of a company is essential for business owners, as it can help them position their business for sale or make informed decisions about its future
Creating a Business that is Sellable and Achieving Goals
  • Matthew Pollard’s goal is to help business owners create rapid growth without sacrificing their well-being, and to make his legacy one where people don’t have to work excessively long hours
  • High achievers are good at writing goals, but often haven’t achieved one, and need to build self-efficacy towards goal attainment, which grows as they achieve their goals
  • Writing down why a goal is important helps people realize they may have inherited their goals from others, and what they’re working towards may not be truly important to them
  • The primary purpose is to help introverts realize they’re not second-class citizens, and to create a business that’s truly important to them, connected to the impact they want to make
Storytelling and Marketing
  • To improve storytelling, practice with someone in the room and ask them to listen and provide feedback on what was done well, using a framework to guide the story
  • When telling a story, using the name of a person instead of a title can help create an emotional connection with the audience
  • In marketing, it’s essential to focus on passion and mission rather than just strategy, and to express the “why” behind the goals to avoid feeling transactional
  • At networking events, it’s crucial to be interested before trying to be interesting, and to know who’s going to be in the room to make the most out of the experience
Effective Communication and Sales
  • To have a successful interview, interviewers should do their research and ask unique questions that haven’t been asked before, rather than relying on standard questions
  • Podcasts are a great way to market a business and drive people to it, and asking unique questions can make an interview stand out
  • Active listening and synthesizing information are important skills, especially in sales conversations, where they can help build a connection with the person and create a personalized story
  • Telling a brand story is different from telling a personal story, as it involves sharing the organization’s values and meaningful impact with a broader audience, whereas a personal story in sales is about relevance to a single person
  • When someone agrees to buy, it’s possible to offer them great free content or discuss what working with the speaker looks like, including using story strategically in a sale to create a paradigm shift
  • In sales, it’s essential to personalize the emotional impact, whereas in networking, there’s more overlap with branding, and it’s crucial to research beforehand to understand the audience
Personal Storytelling and Introversion
  • To determine if someone is an introvert or extrovert, they can reflect on how they feel after a networking event – if they’re emotionally strained or tired, they might be an introvert
  • The speaker uses storytelling in their personal life, but has to be careful not to be too contrived or manipulative, and instead aims to be more authentic and real, especially with their spouse
  • The speaker has learned to switch off their sales strategies in personal relationships, allowing themselves to be more genuine and emotionally open, which can be challenging but is essential for building strong connections
Case Studies and Long-term Planning
  • A copywriter client was struggling to make money with piecemeal work, but after discovering her passion for the health tech space, she created a package to help health tech companies realize their target audience and create a content tree, which led to a $120,000 a year client
  • The copywriter, referred to as the “mission maker,” sold a “Trojan Wars package” to health tech companies, which included a short-term intensive to help them identify their avatar and create a content tree, and eventually led to a $10,000 a month contract
  • The importance of considering the long-term plan for a business, including the possibility of selling it, was emphasized, as not having a plan can lead to a wasted legacy and lost opportunities for the business to continue helping people
