ICYMI: Duggan Announces Five New Union Endorsements in Eight Days

Michigan Business Network: Duggan for Michigan

(Detroit) — Independent candidate for Governor Mike Duggan continues to smash expectations – and this time, he’s getting five new labor endorsements in less than two weeks.

Joining the list of Duggan endorsements this week are: Amalgamated Transit Union Local 26, Oakland County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, Sprinkler Fitters Local 704, Grand Rapids Police Officers Association and the Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union.

Duggan has reached over 20 union endorsements, more than any other candidate combined. These five new endorsements are a point of pride for the wide variety in both industry and location.

While Mayor of Detroit, Duggan made it a priority to connect labor and business to revitalize downtown Detroit.

“Earning the support of Michigan’s working men and women, from bus drivers and pipefitters to police officers and firefighters, means a lot to me,” said Duggan. “What we’re seeing, whether it’s labor unions or chambers of commerce, is that people are fed up with the same old political fights. Lansing keeps arguing while real problems go unsolved. People don’t care about who wins the political games, they care that their kids get a good education, that they can find a good job, and that Michigan is a place where businesses want to grow and create opportunity.”

Since announcing he would run for governor as an Independent, Duggan has made a point of meeting with dozens of labor unions and every chamber of commerce on the map. The result is real conversations about issues facing Michigan.

Duggan and Detroit’s Labor Organizations

During a time when members of his own party were calling to defund the police, Duggan gave officers as much as $10,000 in raises for each officer and put over 300 more officers on the street. In 2025, Duggan worked with ATU Local 26 to implement a competitive contract for more than 500 Detroit Department of Transportation bus operators, raising starting pay to $25 per hour.

Duggan also led the Project Greenlight public safety initiative, resulting in shootings and carjackings in Detroit dropping by 40-50%, and the city experiencing the fewest homicides since 1966. He also brought back 24-hour bus service and made bus routes more regular and efficient, cutting lines that were running with no passengers and adding routes to high-volume areas to allow Detroit residents to rely on public transit.

“Something remarkable is happening. Five major union endorsements just in the last week, and they’re coming from all over the state,” Duggan said. “These are folks who, before, would typically only consider Democrats. And that’s just the last week. I’m now endorsed by more than 20 unions, more than all the Democratic candidates put together. Everywhere I go in the state, working men and women are realizing Lansing is not working for them.”

It’s no secret that Duggan keeps himself busy as a full-time candidate, securing labor endorsements as he travels 5-6 days per week with 3-6 events per day.
