LANSING – As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the Insurance Alliance of Michigan (IAM) is reminding Michiganders of three easy ways to protect their homes before heading out of town.
“The unofficial start of summer is here, and we encourage all Michiganders to take a few easy steps protect their homes if they plan to leave town to celebrate,” said IAM executive director Erin McDonough. “These simple measures can be taken ahead of time to ensure families are informed and can enjoy a stress-free time away from home with the knowledge their belongings and property are being protected.”
Three main tips for protecting your home include:
- Reviewing your homeowners policy: Know what’s covered, especially for theft or water damage.
- Taking photos or video of valuables for insurance documentation.
- Informing your insurer if you’re away for more than 30days, as some policies have vacancy clauses.
The organization is also encouraging boaters to get informed regarding their boat insurance policies and to exercise extra caution during holiday cruises given the large number of boaters expected to be in the water.
Boat insurance may cover things like:
- Liability coverage (if you injure someone or damage property)
- Physical damage (to your boat, motor, trailer, etc.)
- Medical payments (for injuries on your boat)
- Uninsured/underinsured boater coverage
- Towing and assistance
Some things boat insurance may not cover include:
- Normal wear and tear
- Damage from improper maintenance
- Racing or commercial use (unless specified)
- Personal belongings (unless added as extra coverage)
- Marine environmental damage fines (unless covered in liability)
“For both boat and home insurance, it’s always important to review your individual policy so that you are prepared in case of an emergency,” McDonough said.“Your insurance companies and agents are there 24-7 to help you if disaster strikes, so make sure to review your policies and have a fantastic holiday weekend.”
