Grace Christian University Leaders Leverage Their Appointment to the National Higher Education AI Council to Shape the University’s AI Guidelines

Grace Christian University - Wikipedia(GRAND RAPIDS, MI) – Grace Christian University is proud to announce that Dr. Matthew Loverin, Provost and Chief Academic Officer, and Dr. Scott Shaw, Associate Provost, have been appointed to The Center for Digital Education’s inaugural Higher Education AI Council. This esteemed national group will play a pivotal role in guiding the responsible adoption and innovation of artificial intelligence across colleges and universities throughout the United States.

Additionally, Loverin and Shaw are forming an AI Guidance Council at Grace Christian University, comprising faculty, staff, administrators, students, and board members. The group intends to meet up to three times this academic year to develop guidelines for Grace’s overall approach to AI, including literacy, ethics, and integration from a biblical worldview standpoint.

The Higher Education Artificial Intelligence Council unites senior leaders from over 70 institutions across 20 states, creating a platform for structured collaboration, shared strategies, and actionable guidance. The Council aims to foster innovation and empower education by providing a trusted forum for best practices and frameworks that help colleges and universities integrate AI in alignment with their missions.

“The integration of AI into higher education presents both opportunities and challenges,” said Dr. Matthew Loverin, Provost and Chief Academic Officer. “At Grace Christian University, we are committed to leveraging technology to enhance learning while ensuring that we do so responsibly and ethically. We look forward to collaborating with fellow members of the Council to develop effective strategies that will benefit our institution and the broader educational community.”

A recent survey by the Center for Digital Education revealed that 91% of colleges and universities are experimenting with AI tools. However, only 2.5% report that AI is well integrated into their operations. The Council will address these challenges by helping leaders brainstorm real-world use cases, collaborate on governance strategies, and build AI literacy and fluency within their institutions.

Under the leadership of Brian Cohen, Vice President of the Center for Digital Education and former CIO at the City University of New York (CUNY), the Council is poised to make a significant impact on AI adoption in higher education.
